Neighbourhood Watch

The Potential for the Future

Last month I wrote about the potential for Neighbourhood Watch and the meeting I attended at Hutton, one of three, to be held across the country, to take Neighbourhood Watch forward.

In the North West five constabularies;

Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside have come together and have agreed for one representative to represent our region as one of the ten regions in a national body.  Mr Keith Warren, Chairman of Lancashire Neighbourhood Watch Forum will be our voice.

Newsletters

In an effort to cut down on waste in future the number of newsletters distributed to Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators will be strictly limited.  It is no longer feasible to send 40 or 50 copies out.  We have to do our bit for the environment too.  Neighbourhood watch is supposed to be about knowing your neighbour too, not in a nosey way but able to share information.  Newsletters will be sent to co-ordinators who will be asked to pass them on via circulation sheets.

If there are 50 houses on your street; two copies should be sufficient.  One

copy for the odd numbered houses and one for the even side.  Once read you will be asked to cross out your house number and pass it on to your neighbour.  If you know the house is empty or the occupants are on holiday, leave them out.  Eventually the copy should be returned to the co-ordinator.

PACT Meetings

Please make every effort to attend the monthly PACT meetings.  They are informal and are intended to be a two-way communication tool.  Our Community Beat Manager, Neil Tomlinson, normally attends, even on his day off,  and he advise attendees on the progress or actions taken on priorities set at the previous meeting.  The public also have a say and can influence the prioritising of police activities in our area for the forthcoming month.  Crime prevention information is also discussed.  The meetings generally only last one hour.  The details of PACT meetings are widely advertised in the area, thanks to local businesses.   The informal notice board in the village at the entrance to St. Peter’s Church and the Youth & Community Centre at Douglas Park also have details.  If you are unsure you can also ring or e-mail a member of the Community Police Team.

Warm Weather Sneak In Thefts

With the unseasonable warm weather continuing, it is important not to let your defences down against the sneak in or opportunistic thieves.

Please ensure you close your windows if you are leaving your property.

Gardens and conservatories are attractive places to rest and soak up the sun, but is your front door locked? And your side gate secure?

Do not leave your handbag, purse, wallet or car keys where they can be seen.

The contents will be of use – not just for ready cash but credit or debit cards and other information useful to commit identity theft

Any legitimate person from a utility company will have an ID card.  Ring the company and check them out.

Welcome back John

PCSO John Brayshaw is back on the Heysham beat after his brief escape to Bare & Torrisholme.  Laura has moved north to replace John.  Welcome him when you see him out and about.
