On a similiar note, Don Woodhouse has e-mailed us about 'Old Heysham'. Once again if you can help out, please get in touch and we'll try to solve Don's mystery.

"Just after the end of the war, probably 1946/47 I stayed with my Aunt who rented a house at Heysham which was actually on the beach, the sea used to lap against the garden wall as I remember.Ther last time I went to Heysham it had gone. Could you tell me if it was demolished or did the sea claim it and when it went. It was near the bottom of the road leading to the beach. Hope you can help."

Next Ted Greenwood from New Zealand!
Greeting from New Zealand. Just visited your web.
I've been away from Heysham for 33 years and now live in Whangarei,200kms north of Auckland, New Zealand.
Great to see how the village has been beautified.
My father was master on the Heysham to Belfast vessels and I have happy memories of the harbour.
The area where the power stations are sited was called the drydock. As kids we spent a lot of time looking for bird nests and frogs etc.
I'll visit your web site again. Keep up the good work.

Now from Derek Tomlinson
Message: My name is Derek Tomlinson and my late fathers name was John Harold Tomlinson and his home address was 3a McDonald Road Heysham which was close to the harbour. After my father died when I was 12 years old I have not visited Heysham since. I am now 59. We use to visit my gran and uncle Jim at least twice a year. I would spend all my time watching the large steam engines coming to the harbour. I would also visit my aunty Janet and uncle Bill Fee and their children Billy and Ann who I have not heard from for some years although I would like to contact them.I have fond memories of Heysham and although I was born and have live most of my life on the Isle of Wight I am still proud of my Lancashire background. derektomlinson920@btinternet.com

Kay Fussey writes...
My husband's grandmother - Ellen Briggs and a Mrs/Miss Gladys Clarkson lived at Broomfield/Bloomfield House, Heysham in the 1960's and may be 1970's or later. They have both since died and I have for many years tried to locate Marion Briggs Ellen's daughter (? a nurse) with little success. I wondered if any of your older readers may recall Ellen or Gladys - a long shot I know but worth one last try. There are no family members still living to ask.

Lesley Dunn has contacted us from South Wales with the following letter...
I live in South wales but spent my early years in Yorkshire. On visits to Yorkshire we love to visit the wonderfully magical Heysham Church. We brought Welsh friends a few years ago & they were as enchanted as we are. Please can you clear a mystery for me? My family for a few generations
have sat on a seat opposite the grave of a gentleman called Jones. The inscription , as far as I remember, is "Poet, philosopher and failure, alas poor Yorick".
> Who was he and how come he had such an original, facinating headstone?

Another Emigrant
Message: Hi this time it is Tom Greenwood, brother of Ted, who corresponded earlier. We also live in NZ but in Invercargill having left the UK in 1982. I went to Heysham school and can remember mayny happy times in the village and on one occasion being sick from too much nettle beer, you can have too much of a good thing!
I note from St Peters History that in the 11th centuary two vicars were stated as a Thomas Grenewode and a Thomas Greenwood - any relation to our family I wonder. Does anyone have further knowledge on these two? Our family tree does not go that far back but we have certainly been on the Bay for many generations.
I always visit the village on return trips to the UK. It is good to see it being revived and that village life is well and truly alive. email: tnandsmg@xnet.co.nz

I met a very friendly couple whilst travelling back from the Isle of Man on the Ferry scheduled to leave the Island 7.45 pm on Wednesday last. (We were actually delayed in order to take a sick passenger off the boat prior to sailing). they said they live but a few minutes from the terminal.
The couple was in middle age; married with children. The eldest girl aged 21 worked (part time) in a shoe shop and the son was doing an A level course. The lady was good looking with red hair, her husband was bearded with greying hair. She worked in a local arts/drama type centre and he in his own business in electrical machinery.
We found we had much in common particularly with regard to computer technology and I am sure that we would have exchanged E-mail addresses had we thought to do so.
I would like to do so now, and would be grateful if you are able to identify the couple in order that I may get in touch. Frederick Marley.

Message: I wonder if you could help me or advise me on trying to run a news story regarding help at finding some lost family members. Last year while tracing my family tree I managed to locate my mothers cousin in America. He is 84 years old and my mother is 80 years. They decided to reunite with a trip for Deric Jaques to visit Leeds where his mother once performed on stage at the Leeds Grand Theatre. See http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?sectionid=39&articleid=1712147
Time is now running out to reunite their other cousins in Lancashire. My mother and I are planning a trip to see Deric`s family in Michigan in september and we would love to take with us news of three cousins in or around Lancashire. Their names are a Ronald, Ruth and Alan Jones. Their father was Edwin Harry Jones, last known address 26 Kings Crescent, Heysham. We obtained a death certificate for Edwin from 1960. His son Ronald registered the death, his address was 10 Cedar Street, Morecambe.
I`m sure they or their decendants would like to know what happened to their aunty Miss Maudie Ray and the cousins they used to play with in the 1920`s.
Hope you can help with my dilema,
Thanks
Stacey Firth

Subject: Robert or John Murray Holgate
Message: Hi,
I am just writing to you on the offchance that somebody in your village might know of or remember anybody related to the late Robert Holgate (my father). He emigrated to Canada probably with his family (I don\'t know anything about him) but on the funeral announcement it was stated that he was born in Hysham Lancashire. I am really trying to find any branch of family and as Holgate is quite a well known name in Lancashire and Yorkshire, perhaps someone from the village might remember. I now live in Sussex where my father married my mother during the war when he was stationed over here. He returned to Canada after the war - that is why I don\'t know anything about him. I would be very grateful if anyone can give me any information. My grandfather\'s name I believe was John Murray Holgate.
Many thanks
Beryl Smith
